Reconnecting with the Rescued

Five years after a serious construction accident on Highway 89 changed his life, Joe Milos returned to Jackson to thank the people who helped save it.
The accident brought together first responders, healthcare professionals, and flight crews from across the region. Recently, the Foundation had the privilege of gathering many of them around the same table.
Representatives from Jackson Hole Fire/EMS, Teton County Sheriff’s Office, St. John’s Health, Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, Air Idaho, and other regional agencies each played a role in Joe’s rescue, treatment, and recovery.
As Chief Moyer introduced Joe, he reflected on the significance of the gathering. After responding to a difficult call the night before, the team had the opportunity to celebrate a different outcome: a life saved.
Then Joe began to speak.
“What do I say? Do I bring you a card?”
The room shared a laugh before Joe delivered the words that mattered most:
“Thank you. You guys are my heroes, and that is not a cliche.”
Joe told the group that he thinks about them often and that surviving the accident changed his life in countless ways.
For those who respond to emergencies, the work can be measured in calls, hours, miles, and difficult outcomes. It’s rare to sit across the table from someone whose life you helped change.
Sometimes, you get to see the win.
We’re grateful to Joe for coming back and sharing his story, and to every responder and healthcare professional who played a part in his journey. These moments matter.
